Frame within a Frame - Sydney Opera House - 10am - 2 hours
Adding a frame within the frame of your shot has a variety of benefits: - It keeps the viewer’s eye in place and focused on the subject - It adds depth, order and structure to your photo (which can be accentuated even more with a wide aperture) - It can hide something ugly or undesirable in your shot - It can add contrast to an image and make a boring shot suddenly become much more interesting

We have a different photo theme each fortnight and the two hour sessions take place in different outdoor locations across Sydney. Great opportunity to try something new with the guidance of a professional photographer, and come away with some new shots for your portfolio or album.

Complete beginner? We recommend starting with the Photography for Beginners Class, which is a 3 hour structured workshop where you’ll learn the basics of using your camera with more 1-on-1 time with the instructor.

Looking to learn more? Come along to the group sessions, which are more casual and informal than other workshops, and with more time to take photos and put your new skills into practice.

What to bring? We recommend bringing a camera that has full manual mode or semi-manual modes (Aperture or Shutter Priority). Compact cameras and smartphones also welcome!

What’s involved? Each session starts with an introduction to the fortnight’s theme, and the photography instructor will chat about the camera settings and techniques to use. You’ll then have time to take lots of photos, with the instructor present to answer any questions. You’ll receive feedback and have a chance to chat with everyone to share tips and ideas. We’re a social bunch!

Join the Sydney Photography Facebook Group here to share your photos after the session and to take part in our free, fortnightly competitions!

We ask that everyone attending a meetup follows social distancing guidelines:

Stay home if you're sick.
Keep 1.5 metres away from others.
Don't make unnecessary physical contact with others. Avoid physical greetings, such as handshakes, hugs and kisses.
Wash your hands regularly with alcohol-based sanitiser.
Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze. Use a flexed elbow or a tissue; if you use a tissue, dispose of it immediately and appropriately.

Good direction from Matheus, but the 2hr timeframe feels too short. See below, & happy to pay $50 for that.

It's a great photo session. Matt gave us a few simple concepts that helped me look at color with a more artistic eyes. I could see that the pictures I took during the session look so much better than those I had taken before. Matt is an excellent teacher. He's kind and friendly and made a sincere effort to get to know his students and share his story with them. I appreciate Matt's feedbacks on my photos very much. They helped me learn my strengths and weaknesses and offer new approaches to integrate color into my pictures. Matt has kindly lent me one of his prime lens so that he could teach me how to give my pictures a nice boke look. That was totally unexpected. I'd definitely recommmend Matt to other people.

Yesterday was the first Sydney Photography Group event that I had attended. I thought that it was great! I was initially surprised by the structure with its ‘challenges’ and basically being told to go away for 45 minutes and take some photos. But after getting over the shock, I had a great time. I enjoyed having to once again look at the world in a different way and think about what I might shoot. I found Zac’s feedback constructive and valuable. I came away from the morning reviewing what I had learnt and found that I had learnt quite a few things. All-in-all a most enjoyable way to spend a morning! I look forward to attending future sessions.

Good location, friendly crowd, interesting challenges.

I loved having challenges set and being able to just go at own pace to try and meet the challenge. I liked that we didn’t stay all together as we took photos. Being able to go off and use our creativity and then meet up for critiquing was relaxing and fun. It was great having experts available to help with questions and get tips from. They were encouraging and it motivated me to get out and shoot more.

Scott did well for his first time in backup lead role! With such a wide interpretation of urban photography, it was good to get some challenges to look for as well as some motivational advice. Nice to see some more newbies joining the regulars!
